There are a number of steps that can be taken by an organization to ensure that you and the legal staff have a mutally supportive relationship:

  • You and the legal staff should report to the same top executive, who can listen to both sides and decide on a course of action.
  • You should know basic legal concepts and regulatory guidelines in order to build trust and credibility with the legal department.
  • Both functions should be represented on key committees.
  • The organization should have a clearly defined statement of responsibilities for each staff and it's relationship to the other. (Neither should dominate.)
