Rites of Spring

Having been dubbed the first true emo band, Rites of Spring was playing punk that strayed away from the usual angry political themes and instead played songs that were personally emotional-thus being called emo by listeners. Images of strewn flowers, broken guitars and toppled drum kits at the end of their shows were all part of the intense live show that the group was well known for. Formed in 1984, the group included vocalist/guitarist Guy Picciotto, guitarist Eddie Janney, bassist Michael Fellows, and drummer Brendan Canty. The group signed with Dischord Records to release a self-titled album in 1985 and an EP in 1987. After breaking up in 1986, Guy eventually joined Fugazi along with Brendan.
