Concise

Be concise. Text should get to the point, quickly. In the case of the Web, it uses 50% of the words used in print media but says essentially the same thing. Here are a few ways to make your text concise:

  • Stick closely to your topic.
  • Give examples, background information, etc. in hyperlinks to other pages.
  • Avoid repetition and excess verbiage.
  • Limit the use of metaphors, particularly in headings -- users might take you literally and metaphors are often wordy.
  • Use simple sentence structures.

The best writers find a balance between simple, brief, and entertaining text.
