On July 8, 1889 The Wall Street Journal published
its first issue. In 1896, Dow Jones created the industrial average-
with 12 stocks- and separated the railroad stocks into a separate
average (renamed the transportation index in 1970). Later that
year, daily publication of the average began in the Wall Street
Journal. Over the course of its existence, the Wall Street Journal
has won 26 Pulitzer's.
The Wall Street Journal is currently the number
1 daily newspaper in the United States with a circulation of 1,762,751.
Subscribers have an average household income of $338,200 and an
average household net worth of $2,176,700 - well over twice that
of affluent adults.
