Castillo carries on the proud tradition of talented ballplayers from Dominican Republic, such as Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs. As a non-drafted free agent, Castillo has "literally" been a steal for the Marlins. In 2000, he set club records in stolen bases (62), singles (180), batting average (.334) and multi-hit games (55). All of which, except the Major League leading stolen base total, were records held by one of the original drafted players from the inaugural season in 1993, Jeff Conine.
