Annual Reports

Annual reports are publications required of publicly held companies by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as a way of documenting fiscal soundness and chronicling the year's events. Many privately held companies and nonprofit organizations also produce annual reports, although they aren't required to. The annual report is a public document intended to communicate the status of the company to the public. The report also includes goals and objectives for the upcoming year.

The fundamental purpose of most annual reports is to provide investors with financial data and description of the company's operations. After the SEC required electronic filing from publicly held institutions, many companies decided to have the annual reports available online to make the information readily available to financial analysts, brokers and the media.
