What is it?
A spectacular bonfore in the shape of the Chinese character "DAI," meaning large, is lit near the summit of the Mt.Nyoigatake. This is the most splendid attraction of the Bon festival in Kyoto. Bon festival is held in memory of the dead who, according to Buddhist belief, revisit the earth for the week. Lanterns are lit and Bon Odori folk dances are offered to comfort the souls of the dead.
