Awa Odori Dance Festival
What is it?
The Awa-odori dance carnival brings the streets to life throughout Tokushima every summer. Large group of elaborately dressed men, women and children dance uninhibitedly to an enchanting rythm of pounding drums, high pitched bamboo flutes and a variety of other traditional Japanese instruments, and they sing the song "Yoshikono-bushi" to the accompaniment of the instruments. It is one of the most well known folk dances in Japan, and it is performed during the Bon festival.
