What is it?

Citizen in fancy disguises parade through the streets, masquerading as legendary seven gods of good fortune on hourseback to the accompaniment of "shamisen," flutes and drums. The word "Dontaku" is thought to be derived from the Dutch word zondag, meaning "sunday." Before becoming a festival of the city of Fukuoka in 1962, it was known as "Matsuribayashi"which had a history dating back to the Muromachi Era. Today, people parade and dance through the city in costume, clapping two rice servers to the music. No other festivals attract as big of a crowd as the week of "Hakata Dontaku."
