The word "Dontaku" is thought to be derived from the Dutch word zondag, meaning "sunday." Before becoming a festival of the city of Fukuoka in 1962, it was known as "Matsuribayashi"which had a history dating back to the Muromachi Era. Today, people parade and dance through the city in costume, clapping two rice servers to the music. No other festivals attract as big of a crowd as the week of "Hakata Dontaku."
