Region: Hokuriku-Chubu

City: Wajima

What is it?

This ritual is said to have it's origins in an event in Japanese history. Led by their lord, a group of villagers disguised with fierce maskes and long wild hair made of seaweed stormed into the camp of an invading rival lord one night beating their drums loudly. Their foes were so completely demoralized that they left without attacking the village. The villagers beat their drums and dance on the beach in thank for their local god's protection. The drummers also perform nightly at Sumiyoshi shrine in Wajima-city during the summer for tourists.
