ed is active in environmental groups and has received many civic and industry honors. Two outstanding honors were being named Time Magazines’s Man of the Year in 1991 and receiving the Governor’s Award in 1992 from the National Academy of Arts and Sciences. Not only this, but he is also is a member of the board of several organizations including the National Cable Television Association, the Martin Luther King Center for Nonviolent Social Change and the Greater Yellowstone Coalition.
He is also an accomplished yachtsman. He has won national and world recognition in sailing and has successfully defended the America’s Cup in 1977 on his yacht Courageous. When he came to accept the trophy, however, he was drunk. He also won the 1979 Fastnet Trophy and four Yachtsman of the Year awards.
