Enjoying Traditional vs. Online Zines, continued

Despite all the obvious benefits of e-zines, some people believe traditional paper zines will continue to thrive. And why not?

Just as the online shopper sometimes visits The Gap in the mall because he likes to stroke the corduroy, sometimes zine readers just want to own the printed paper29. It's proof they tracked down the address of the zine and made a suitable deal for that issue.

The actual paper zine also holds the promise of permanence. The online zine will be updated, the available articles and artwork might become inaccessible to the reader. But that physical zine is yours forever, which is fine since some people hold their zine collection as a badge of honor and accomplishment.

Perhaps the strongest argument for the continued success of the traditional zine format is this: They look and feel handmade, because they are.

That's attractive to paper zine audiences. The flaws are part of the presentation30; the imperfections suggest sincerity. Somehow this doesn't translate well to e-zines, which seem to be evolving into slickly-designed entities of their own.
