Online Zines

Gather around, thrillseekers! The future is here. Actually, the future got here six or seven years ago. That's when the first electronic zines ("e-zines"7) started appearing on the Internet.8

E-zines cover much of the same topical ground as their print brethren.9 That is, there are e-zines that focus on humor, politics, sexuality, literature, art... the works. While the first e-zines were distributed through e-mail,10 the more recent additions are created for viewing on the World Wide Web.11 This means that whatever bells and whistles can be added to a web site are now available to the publishers of e-zines.

An example is a music zine offering a snippet of a reviewed song for listening.12 Animations, full color photos, video clips, hypertext links and message boards can also be integrated into the design of an e-zine. By their nature, these are features not found in traditional Xeroxed zines.

Many e-zines are unique to the web, but others are online versions of zines already in print.13 Often these "web versions" act as promotional sites, encouraging the visitor to subscribe to the traditional print zine. These sites offer reprints of already published articles or truncated versions of current work to act as "teasers" for the potential subscriber.

Here's a couple of sample e-zines to get you started. (These links will take you to external sites in a separate window. To return, just close the new window.)
