Stop! Children's Cancer

Stop! was begun in 1981 by the Freeman family, it is a locally founded and operated organization, managed by a thirty-three member Board of Directors. It has been a non-profit organization in Gainesville for almost 20 years. Leukemia is the most common form of cancer in children and brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer-related death in children. Stop! is dedicated to raising funds for basic research, research scholars, and vital research equipment for the Divisions of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Pediatric Neuro-Oncology at the University of Florida College of Medicine.

Stop! had a website created in April 2000. They did it because "everyone else is doing it." The current executive director, Gloria, wants to learn to create and update a better website for the organization.

"It's not that there is an image problem, but that people don't know that we're on the web," Gloria said.

Gloria believes that the current site does not encourage people to come back for a visit or get updated information.

While the website has not changed Gloria's job, she envisions the possibilities that having the site creates.

She wants to use the website to promote communication and cut back on mailing costs. The organization creates a quarterly newsletter that Gloria would like to see emailed to people instead of costly postage.

"I feel the internet is a tool that we have not effectively used," Gloria said.
