History of Print Publishing
Paper became widely available during the thirteenth century, therefore making writing noticeable to all. But the world's first newpaper wasn't published until the seventeenth century, 1609, in Germany. Print publications are classified into different types like: newsletters, quarterlies, monthlies, biweeklies, tabloid weeklies and dailies, and of course the daily newspaper.
History of Online Publishing
Online publishing has been around for about 10 years, yet the format we know today has not always existed. The "serious" online magazine publishing's began about 6 years ago, when publishers started to focus on "producing models on the Web that had advertising revenue and generate income."(Gable) Popular services like America Online, Prodigy(made an "ill-fated" attempt at online publishing which discouraged later Web publishing efforts.), and Compuserve all had online publications since day one. But, before all these fancy services came about, ClariNet Communications was providing commercial newspapers via the Internet. The service offered versions of popular newspapers like The New York Times, The Washington Post, and USA Today. These publications were all text, lacking the graphics and images that make today's Webzines pop. Although some people speculated that the Webzines would change the publishing industry, this has not occured. "The original three-legged stool of publishing is still relevant."(Gable) Today, major print publications have hundreds of engineers, programmers, and database developers in their staff to "make them able to control the technology environments around the Web publishing.Because everything on the Internet is technically "published," I want to clarify that the online publishing I will be referring to during this report is online magazine publishing."(Gewecke) [Sidenote: Because everything on the Internet is technically "published," I want to clarify that the online publishing I will be referring to during this report is online magazine publishing.]
