Ancient History...

The game of basketball was invented by Dr. James A. Naismith in 1891. Dr. Naismith lived in Springfield, Massachusetts and the cold winters of the north restricted the types of games that could be played. And as an instructor at the YMCA school he needed something physical and fun for the boys to do. So he invented a game that could be played indoors with a ball by hanging up a couple of basket on opposite sides.

The Beginning of Basketball

The game of basketball began to rise in popularity in the early 1900s throughout America in high school and college gyms. The game of basketball finally broke through as a legitimate sport in the late 1940s when the professional league was created.

The BAA (Basketball Association of America) was the first professional league created. It would later be renamed to the NBA or National Basketball Association. Some of the first cities with teams still exist today such as:

  • Boston Celtics
  • New York Knickerbockers
  • Minneapolis Lakers (now known as the Los Angeles Lakers)
  • Fort Wayne Pistons (now known as the Detriot Pistons)
  • Philadelphia 76ers
