When getting your tattoo, there are a lot of things to consider. Above all, make sure you're happy with your design and that you've chosen a shop and an artist that you're comfortable with. Never rush into something permanent and never settle for less than what you want. Here are a few pointers for getting you through your initial experience.
- Consult your physician if you have any conditions you feel would be affected by the tattoo process. Don't continue with the tattoo if you have a cold, sunburn or are feeling under the weather. Don't take aspirin-based medication or anything else that will thin your blood and cause you to bleed more.
- Remember that you are working with an artist. Allow him or her to have some creative freedom with your design. If they he or she cares about you as a client, they will maintain your design ideas and merge them with their own.
- That said, also know that if the artist is reputable, you are going to pay for the well-crafted art. Don't insult the artist by trying to haggle; if you feel the price is too high look for ways to cut back the tattoo size or color selection.
- Don't wear anything to the shop that will interfere with the process. You'll need to be comfortable enough to sit or lay in the outfit for the duration of the tattoo. You'll want something that can be stained by blood or ink if it touches the area, and something that won't restrict the way you have to sit based on the location of the tattoo itself.
- Just for your own sake, know that it's going to hurt. If you complain, the shop artists will only joke with you about it.
