How to Stop Motion

BMX biker

If you would like to freeze the motion, like in this BMX picture on the left, the most important requirement is to have a fast shutter speed. With a quick setting, the camera can catch the subject mid-action. However, the shutter speed also depends on the subject, as a picture person biking will not need a shutter speed as fast as a car driving by.

Another setting to consider is the f-stop, or aperture. For sports especially, you may want the background to be blurred so that the subject stands out. A wide f-stop will produce a shallow depth of field, and will also let enough light in to compensate for the fast shutter speed.
