~Step by Step: Head Position~
  1. Kicking
  2. Head Position
  3. Body Position
  4. Arm Strokes:Freestyle
  5. Arm Strokes:Backstroke
  6. Side Breathing
On every boat, there is a rudder that stears the vessel
in the direction the captain wants the craft to go. When
swimming freestyle and backstroke, your head acts as the
rudder to your stroke.

To practice and perfect the head position

  • Keeping your head in the right position will keep you going in a
straight line down the pool lane.

  • When swimming freestyle, your head should remain still throughout
the entire stroke except when turning your head to breath to the
side. If you move your head from side to side, you will not
swim in a straight line and have to use extra energy to get across
    the pool.

  • For freestyle, if you continually look at the bottom of the
pool your head will stay in the correct position.

  • For backstroke, it is more difficult to keep your head still
because it is easy to look around at what is above you. Instead,
find something to keep your eyes focused on. When the item goes out
of range, find something else to keep your focus. This will help
you know that you have correct head position.

  • Remember, the shortest distance between two points is a straight line.
