How to

{1. ice the base of the cake}

The first step in decorating a cake is to cover the cake with your base icing. Although it seems simple enough, there is a wrong way to do this and it could ruin the rest of your decorating efforts. Follow these simple steps and you can't go wrong:

Step #1 - flip the cake over so the bottom of the cake is actually the top. Place a large amount of icing on the top of the cake.

Step #2 - Begin smoothing the icing over the top of the cake using a long metal spatula. Don't worry if the icing isn't even everywhere, but make sure to cover the entire cake thoroughly. Take time icing the corners of the cake because they are the hardest to cover. The bottom of the cake is the least important to cover because you are most likely going to add a border there later.

Step#3 - Once you have covered your entire cake with icing, you can begin smoothing over the rough edges of the icing to give the cake a sleek finish. Dip your spatula into hot water and run the spatula over the icing in a continuous motion. Repeat as necessary. Your cake is now iced!
