Cake decorating is a relatively new concept compared to cake baking and the practice dates back to the mid-17th century in Europe. Cakes were originally decorated for the purpose of being on display at banquets and parties held by European aristocracy. Even back then, cakes were characterized by elaborate designs and colorful accents. It was finally the French who, during the 19th century, popularized the concept of dessert and brought decorated cakes to people's dining tables.

Today, the art of cake decorating has become popular across North America, South America, Western Europe, Australia and South Africa, with each region developing its own style and techniques. Decorated cakes have become an integral part of all birthday, anniversary, graduation, wedding, bridal shower and baby shower celebrations.
