Welcome to my study guide for the GRE Literature subject test.

The test comprises of both literary history questions and literary theory questions, and so I have provided a timeline of both the major movements in literature and the major movements in literary criticism and theory.

It is my hope that these guides will allow you to pin point your weaknesses in "chunks," so that you can continue a well-rounded study of literature.

This is by no means a how-to on cramming, but rather an overview of important concepts.

Remember: this isn't a test you can cram for the night before! In order to do well, you must begin preparation as soon as possible and incorporate some of the test material into your curriculum . It is not expected that you get anywhere near all of the questions right on the exam. The purpose of the test is to see where your knowledge lies, but my philosophy is that it can't hurt to know a little of everything.
