Getting up or "popping up" is said to be the hardest part of surfing. Once you feel the wave is carrying you forward it's time to grab both sides of your board, lift up and pop your legs under you. As you gain your balance and the feel of the wave you can gradually stand up as you see fit. This is where the footing comes in, the foot that you immediately put first is your dominant leg. If it is your left foot you are "Goofy Footed" and if it's your right your just regular, the same applies to skateboarding and snowboarding.

"This takes some time and practice, so be patient with yourself it will come," says Trey Young Professional surfer.
