Once you are outside and spot the wave you want to ride you should start paddling fast about ten feet before your wave arrives to your location. The idea is to already have the nmomentum and speed of the wave so it will pick you up. Make sure to positon yourself equally on the board before you begin to paddle so the nose does not go under as you begin to paddle. Your weight should be evenly distributed as you begin to paddle. Some surfers also use their feet for extra speed to catch the wave, this is optional but very helpful if you are having trouble geeting up the initial speed.
