Balance is the true art of surfing. Once balance is achieved there is no limit to the things you can do. Once you have stood up on your board and the weight of the wave is carrying you your shoulders should be square to the direction you are going. Some surfers use their arms to help with the balance but a true professional surfer doesn't need to. Once you feel comfortable with the board the need for your arms will just go away.

Balance can also be achieved by good foot placement. Your feet should be equally divided by the center line on the board. Your toes should be on one side of the line and your heels on the other.
