belay

To belay is to secure a climber. When top-roping, say "belay on" when you've tied into the rope and are ready to climb.

beta

Insider information on how to climb a route. Most climbers won't give you beta unless you ask for it, so say something like, "What's your beta for this?"

bump

To quickly move a hand or foot a small distance to another useful hold.

boulder

To climb without ropes to a height where it is still safe to jump.

builder

To climb on buildings.

campus

To climb dynamically using only your upper body.

chickhead

A knobby hold that looks like a chicken's head.

crimper

A hold so small that you can only use your fingertips to use it.

crux

The hardest part of a route. You'll often hear, "I can do everything else, I've just got to get the crux."

dyno

Dynamic movement towards a far away hold.

flash

To finish a climb on your first try. Say, "I flashed it!"
