Putting MiMo on the Map

The garish neon signs, unconventional curves and sheer audacity of MiMo hotels built in the 1950s expelled their makers from traditional architectural circles of the day. The break from high Modernism, chronicled by Nash and Robinson in MiMo: Miami Modern Revealed, set the stage for the creation of a new category, Resort MiMo, as distinct and evolved from both minimalist International Style and Art Deco.

Today, these hotels are time capsules. Pioneering architects such as Morris Lapidus, Melvin Grossman, Norman Giller and Igor B. Polevitsky designed their extravagant hotels along Collins Avenue to usher in America's first middle class eager to experience a cinematic luxury they could finally afford.
