The Zone Diet

The Zone: A Dietary Road Map to Lose Weight Permanently, by Barry Sears

The Zone Diet was developed by Dr. Barry Sears, who stressed a "40-30-30" approach to eating. The three groups were carbohydrates, proteins and fats, respectively.

According to Sears, such a ratio gives the body a proper hormone balance, something he feels is ignored by diets such as Atkins. Staying in a proper "zone" of eating, he claims, will release natural anti-inflammatories into the body which are heart and health friendly.

In a typical Zone meal, the participant eats protein in a portion size equal to the palm of his or her hand. Also, he or she is to consume as many non-starch raw vegetables as he or she can stand, enough carbohydrates to maintain mental health, and enough monounsaturated oils to reduce hunger.
