The Sonoma Diet, based on a book written by Dr. Connie Guttersen, features a blend of eating habits practiced by individuals living near the Mediterranean Sea and Sonoma Valley. It has three stages, known as the "Sonoma Waves," which is similar to that of the Atkins Diet. Ten "power foods are emphasized while on this plan:

Wave 1

The first wave is restrictive and guidelines are provided through the book or online meal planners. Recipes are provided. This stage lasts 10 days.

Wave 2

Similar to the Atkins Plan, this is the ongoing weight loss plan, and this is where the individual reaches his or her target weight. Specific plate sizes are recommended and the plan teaches you how to fill each plate.

Wave 3

The final stage is lifelong maintentance, which proceeds after reaching target weight.
