The End of an Era
The release of the "Smoking Gun Tape" on Aug. 5, 1974 made Nixon's impeachment almost certain. To avoid the disgrace of an impeachment, Nixon resigned four days later on Aug. 9, 1974. He is the only U.S. president that has resigned.
