Efforts for Survival

The SWIM Act allows Florida’s five water management districts to prioritize which bodies of water need immediate attention and developing management plans. St. Johns River Water Management District manages the St. Lucie Estuary and prioritized its recovery, committing to establish a minimum flow and level of fresh and polluted water into the estuary. The Florida State Government has also launched an important canal C-44 project in May 2006 as part of its Acceler8 program. The project will help restore the natural watershed from Lake Okeechobee and control releases of freshwater into the estuary.
