International Women's Day: March 8, 2004 - Laleh Park

Women's Cultural Center decided to repeat the successful 2003 experience of celebrating International Women's Day in Laleh Park in 2004 as well. The center received official permission to hold the gathering and the event was publicly announced in women's websites. However, the permission was withdrawn a few hours before the start of the event, Reuters reported. The police and pressure groups started to attack the 200 attendants who arrived in the park not knowing the event is cancelled. The attendants were asked by the police to leave the area. Consequently, the gathering was disrupted and no speeches were given. There were no arrests or serious injuries according to Reuters, but some attendants were pushed to the ground and forced to leave, the witnesses said.
