International Women's Day: March 8, 2003 - Laleh Park

On March 8, 2003, women's movement activists in Iran gathered in Tehran's Laleh Park to celebrate International Women's Day publicly, for the first time after the 1979 revolution. The gathering was initiated by Women's Cultural Center. Several feminist activists, including Shirin Ebadi (who later won Noble Peace Prize), Shadi Sadr, Nooshin Ahmadi Khorasani and Firouzeh Mohajer gave speeches. The main theme of this year’s talk was International Peace, but the speakers talked about other issues such as women’s rights. The gathering was treated peacefully by the police who just separated men and women in the park.
