Causes of insomnia vary across the map.

SLEEP APNEA

This is a breathing disorder. There is a partial obstruction in the lung passages. Pauses in breathing can last up to 10 seconds, which results in a drop in blood and oxygen levels. Snoring is sometimes indicative of sleep apnea, but that is not always the case.

RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME

Restless Leg Syndrome occurs when there are sensations felt in the leg that result in a urge to move them. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke describes the sensations "as pulling, drawing, crawling, wormy, boring, tingling, pins and needles, prickly, and sometimes painful sensations that are usually accompanied by an overwhelming urge to move the legs."(9) The moving of the legs eases the discomfort but disrupts sleep and can cause insomnia.
