The animals that we eat are branded, castrated and dehorned, all without pain relief. They are kept in small spaces in which they are often isolated from contact with other animals, and as a general matter, are treated as things - as beings without any value except their value to feed humans.

Any interest that these animals have can be quantified and sold away as long as it benefits humans to do so. Although, "free-range" animals may suffer to a lesser degree than those who are factory-farmed, they are still regarded as commodities, as resources, as people's property.

Our society criticizes the "unnecessary" suffering of animals as morally unacceptable. But then, the eating of animals and animal products is considered, somehow, as "necessary".

Nowadays, more people is beginning to understand that humans no longer must consume animal products in order to maintain optimal health. Millions of people around the world now and throughout human history have lived healthy lifestyles on diets without animal products.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the American Dietetic Association have recognized that a plant-based diet can provide sufficient protein, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients and is perfectly healthy for humans. Animal foods are coming under greater suspicion within the mainstream scientific community.

Day by day, more health professionals are recommending a reduction in the consumption of meat and other animal products, and some are even asking the elimination of animal products from people's diet.
