Growing Pains

In 1970, the first official census revealed that a mere 7,004 people called Hernando home but, by 2000, that number had grown to 130,802. Hernando is consistently in the top 10 fastest growing counties in the United States and shows no sign of slowing down. Some estimates even place Hernandoís population at over 250,000 by 2030.

This map shows the population density of Hernando Count in 1997. Each red dot represents 20 people, putting the total population at 122,099. Click the map to view a larger, more detailed version.

Hernando County Population Density

Although it may be spread out, Hernando provides easy access to almost anything one could want. Three local hospitals, two movie theatres, access to rivers, lakes, nature trails and the Gulf of Mexico, a skate park, dozens of chain restaurants and what seems like two million shopping plazas allow for countless activities. And if itís not here, Tampa is just 30 minutes away on the new Suncoast Express Way.

And despite the ever-expanding sub-divisions, non-stop business construction and growing traffic problems, Hernando is still home to over 20 parks, beaches and reserved wetlands and forests.
