I have been playing basketball video games since I was in elementary school. The first game I remember playing was One-on-One Basketball for the Atari. This game let you play with either Julius Erving or Larry Bird and the two would face off against each other. Though this game was as basic as it gets, it was still kind of cool. I remember being able to break the backboard on a dunk and a guy would come sweep away the glass. Other great basketball games that would follow over the years included Bulls vs. Blazers, NBA Jam and NBA Live. Even though Bulls vs. Blazers was a fun game, the latter two are the ones that I think of when I talk about the all-time best basketball games.
NBA JamNBA Jam, which was made by Acclaim, started off in the arcades in the early 90s. It was a four-player game (two-on-two) that was the first game to be officially licensed by the NBA, allowing it to include real teams, real players and the ability to have each of the players resemble what they really look like. Though there were only two players on each team, it was usually the teams best two at the time. However, one thing must be made clear about NBA Jam: this game was strictly about fun and entertainment. There were only two players on each time and you were pretty much allowed to dunk the ball from anywhere on the court. After you hit a certain amount of shots in a row, you would go on fire and the basketball would then turn into a fireball as you shot it. Though this game was not for people who only play more of a simulation type of game, it became very popular at the time. After starting off in the arcade, NBA Jam would later go on to other consoles, like the Sega Genesis, Nintendo Game Boy and the Super Nintendo.
NBA LiveFor the people who did not care much for NBA Jam and its unrealistic style that it presented, NBA Live is exactly what they were looking for. The first NBA Live, which is made by EA Sports, was released in 1995 and was available for the Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo and for the PC. This game was setup to feel just like the real game and did a good job in presenting this. It featured all the teams and players and had a season mode that let you play the team's real schedule. Though the graphics were a little shaky for the first few years, the jump to Playstation and later to Playstation 2 and Xbox would help solve this problem. However NBA Live 2001, which was its first game to be available for the PS2, was absolutely horrible. The graphics were bad and so were the controls.
Over the last few years, many new features have been added. Franchise mode, which pretty much all the sports games have now, was added a few years back and so was the ability to play with old-time great NBA players, like Larry Bird and Wilt Chamberlain. A really cool feature that the newest NBA Live game has is the added feature of a slam dunk contest and a three-point shooting contest. Another big feature that has really given a major boost to the sports video game industry in general is the ability to play the game online. So now you can play NBA Live against anyone that has internet service and this has really revolutionized this game, as well as many others. | Football | Basketball | Baseball | Home | Sources | |
