With all the hype football and basketball games get nowadays, many people don't realize just how far baseball games have come and how many new features these games now include. When it comes to baseball games, everyone else seems to have a different choice on what game they actually play. Some people swear by All-Star Baseball, some by High Heat Baseball. I on the other hand have always been a fan of MVP Baseball, which was formerly know as Triple Play Baseball until the 2003 version of the game. However, before I got into MVP Baseball, my game of choice was RBI Baseball, one of the great early sports game in its day.
RBI BaseballThe first RBI Baseball game was released in 1988 by Tengen for the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System). This game only had 10 teams (eight Major League teams and the two All-Star teams), but it is one of the first baseball games that did have actual players in the game. When you first look at RBI Baseball, the first thing that goes through your mind is that the graphics are pretty funny looking and that all the players look fat. You might also notice that the players can't jump, are real slow and that the bat looks bigger than their body. However, in my opinion one thing is still certain: this game is a lot of fun for as old as it is. The game play is smooth and you can hit a bunch of homeruns. After hitting a homerun, fireworks go off. Though the first RBI Baseball was more about fun and less about realism, RBI Baseball 2 was a little bit of both. In this game, you got to play with all of the major league teams and it has all of the players. Unlike the first version, where the players didn't really move much at all, this game allowed the players to jump and slide, and the game play was very smooth as well. Though there would be more RBI Baseball games to come out after this one, it was those first two that set the tone for the rest of the series.
MVP BaseballMVP Baseball, which was formerly known as Triple Play Baseball up until the 2003 version of the game came out, is made by EA Sports. This game started off in 1996 and was available for the Sega Genesis. It contained a pretty basic format compared to today. Over the years, EA Sports has added many key features to the game. As the game would go from the Sega Genesis, to the Playstation, to the Playstation 2 and Xbox, the graphics and game features have improved immensely. There has been a franchise mode that the game has included over the last few years that has allowed the user to sign free agents, draft players, make trades and control their team from the top to the bottom. The stadiums look very realistic and player faces do as well. Another big feature that has come along in the last few years is the "pure swing system." This maximizes the user's ability to control a player's swing by letting them decide how they can approach each pitch. If they want to be able to pull an inside pitch or hit an outside pitch to the opposite field, this new feature gives the user the capability to do so.
All these advancements in this game has come about because of the new powerful engines that the consoles now employ. With the way technology changes constantly, you could be sure there will be more new features added in the near future. | Football | Basketball | Baseball | Home | Sources | |
