What the flag means

The flag holds dear to many hearts in America. While it has many meaning, the colors of the flag have specific meaning that reflect the nation that it represents.

The 13 red and white stripes represent the original colonies.

The white stripes represent purity and innocence

The red stripes represent hardiness and valor.

The blue stripes represent vigilance, perseverance and justice.

To salute the flag, non-military personnel must remove any headwear, face the flag and place thier right hand over their heart. Military or uniformed personnel must face the flag and salute. For the same reason of placing the hand over the heart, when wearing a pin that represents the American flag it must be placed on the left lapel closest to the heart which signifies the point that we must view the flag as being alive.

Flag Desecration - destroying or misrepresentation of our symbol of freedom

While so many love the flag, there may be just as many or more who are not so fond of the symbol of freedom. Flag desecration is not a new phenomenon and spans many generations.

Flag desecration comes is done in many ways the most commonly of which is by burning the flag in an unceremonious fashion. The Supreme Court of the United States ruled in 1989 that the burning of a flag was protected under the First Amendment as an expression of free speech. Justice Anthony Kennedy concurred with the ruling saying “that we must make decisions we do not like” and added that it was “poignant but fundamental that the flag protects those who hold it in contempt.”
