Equality, Civil Liberties and Minorities:

Edwards is in favor of affirmative action and seeks to increase the fairness of college admissions by stopping legacy policies that help the wealthy. He also favors legislation that will outlaw racial profiling.
Edwards supports barring job discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.(*)


Economy:

Edwards will give a 10 percent tax break to companies in order to keep jobs from going overseas.(*)

Edwards wants to encourage home ownership by offering a tax credit that will be matched by up to $5,000 toward a person's first home.
He will decrease capital gains taxes as incentive for investing.(*)

Edwards will repeal President Bush's tax cuts. He will form a commission to reduce frivolous corporate subsidies. He'll also end subsidies for oil companies mining public land and rich farm owners. Edwards claims these and other proposals will save more than $2 trillion during the next 20 years. He plans to invest the savings in economic growth, education and health care. (*)


Education:

Edwards will offer one year of paid tuition to public community colleges and universities as long as students perform about 10 hours of community service per week. He also seeks to increase fairness by stopping legacy admissions.(*)

Edwards does not support vouchers.
He wants every high school to offer a college-preparation track.(*)

Edwards will increase wages for teachers, especially those who take jobs where shortages exist.(*)


Iraq:

Edwards supported the decision to invade Iraq. He now feels the U.S. should seek help from allies in reconstructing the nation.(*)


Women:

Edwards supports a woman's right to chose and increased funding for women's health research. He also feels parents should be able to take unpaid leave, beyond that required by the Family Medical Leave Act, on a part-time basis. He'll also support some unpaid leave for small business employees. Additionally, Edwards wants to double financial support for adult day care.(*)
