The city of Salamanca is located in the Spanish province of Salamanca, which is situated in the southwest corner of Castile & Leon. Salamanca borders the Tormes River. There are 159,000 people who inhabit the 12,336 square kilometers of Salamanca.
The city is located in central Spain, approximately 200 kilometers from Madrid. It is also close to popular tourist destinations such as Segovia, Avila, Burgos and Toledo. In order to travel to Salamanca from outside of Spain, it is most convenient to fly into the Madrid airport and travel by car from there.

Salamanca is a very pedestrian-friendly city. Not only do the visiting students walk everywhere they go, but the residents often do not have cars and travel primarily by foot. Those that do have automobiles experience extremely narrow roads and limited access to pedestrian-only streets. It is possible to walk from one end of the city to the other well within one hour.
