The nation of Ecuador, located on the Pacific coast of South America, is currently the stage of a bitter conflict between indigenous peoples fighting to protect their ancestral lands and multi-national corporations intent on acquiring the oil that lies beneath. Much is at stake. The implications of pending legal decisions in the courts of Ecuador could greatly impact the destiny of indigenous peoples, operations of multi-national corporations in developing nations, and human rights and environmental movements worldwide.
