Kingston's Government Function

Kingston also has a government function. Government offices and buildings such as the Ministry of Commerce, Science and Technology, the Inland Revenue Department, Ministry of Finance and Planning, the Jamaica Electoral Office the House of Parliament, and the Minister of National Security and Justice are located in the New Kingston area.

The location of the House of Parliament is ideal because residents on the entire island look at this city for guidance when it comes to keeping law and order. This is quite important during times of unrest. It is also in Kingston that major political rallies are held at times of election. The two main political parties are the Jamaica Labor Party and the Peoples National Party whom often take aggressive measures, termed political tribalism, to ensure that the winner of the election is favorable. These aggressive measures mean protests, road blocks and sometimes shootings.
