"The World is a Ghetto" was the best-selling album of 1973. It was War's first album in three years. It only included five songs, but most of them were over eight minutes long.

The group, which recorded popular songs like "Low Rider," incorporated elements of jazz, funk, Latin, and hip hop into their music. Released at a time when Blaxploitation was exploding on film, some describe this release as "a soundtrack without a film."
