Unique Portuguese Facts

Consoda

Portuguese families have what is known as the consoda, a feast held Christmas morning where they leave out extra spaces and food in honor of the dead. This is supposed to bring them good luck for the year.

Cepo de Natal

The Portuguese also have their own Christmas log, known as the cepo de Natal, that burns during the consada. They save the ashes from the log and during thunderstorms that come throughout the year, they sprinkle them in the fireplace. It is a common belief that no lightning bolt will strike near a Yule Log's ashes.
