Gannett's Florida Today

Yhanique Whitely, a University of Florida journalism senior, landed a spot as an intern with Gannett's Florida Today in Melbourne, Fla. She was nominated by the university to compete for the Chips Quinn Scholars program and was selected as one of the recipients to be placed at Florida Today for an internship.

Yhanique spent her internship with the newspaper in shifts, with half the summer in the features department and the other half as a copy editor.

"I was exposed to what real journalism is about: deadlines," Yhanique recalls of her experience. "I loved it though, my co-workers were nice and assisted me whenever I needed help. I felt like I was a part of the team."

Yhanique noted that the smaller size of the publication lent itself to opportunities for some real involvement with the publication and some hands-on experience, a major consideration when many interns at larger publications spend their tenures as secretaries for top editors.

"It is a medium-sized newspaper, which means I had more opportunities to pitch ideas and actually follow through to write the story," She says. "It was a great experience and I earned many clips."
