- The land that will become Alabama is part of the Mississippi
Territory.

- Congress creates the Alabama Territory.

- Traveler's accounts describe "Sodom" as a settlement
of outlaws and runaway slaves across the river from Columbus,
Georgia.

1832 |
- Girard, near the location of Sodom, is established as a bordertown
trading post with ferry access to Columbus.

- Horace King, a slave from South Carolina, builds the first
bridge across the Chattahoochee River connecting Girard and
Columbus.
