Early History, 1798-1933

1798
  • The land that will become Alabama is part of the Mississippi Territory.
1817
  • Congress creates the Alabama Territory.
1819
  • Alabama becomes a state.
 
  • Traveler's accounts describe "Sodom" as a settlement of outlaws and runaway slaves across the river from Columbus, Georgia.
1832
  • Girard, near the location of Sodom, is established as a bordertown trading post with ferry access to Columbus.
1833
  • Horace King, a slave from South Carolina, builds the first bridge across the Chattahoochee River connecting Girard and Columbus.
