Robert Towne's bio-pic about the legendary long-distance runner Steve Prefontaine. The picture follows Pre's Oregon upbringing, through his days at Oregon University through the Munich Olympics. Without Limits explores Pre's relationships with Oregon coach Bill Bowerman and Pre's girlfriend Mary Marckx. Both Bowerman and Marckx worked with the film's writers and producers. . He revolutionized his sport with his competitive ferocity and rock star’s ability to ignite the crowd. In this country, during his lifetime, he was undefeated at his distance and held all seven American records between 2,000 and 10,000 meters. He ran one of the more memorable races at the Munich Olympics and was strongly favored to win at the Montreal Games in 1976, but never got the chance. Pre's career was cut short at the age of twenty-four when he was killed in a car accident, adding to the myth of this talented, inspired athleteIn 1975 Steve Prefontaine was killed in a car accident.
