Hi there! My name is Michelle Lee Harris, a freelance journalist, editor and reporting instructor currently living in the heart of the Gator Nation, Gainesville, Fla. I am in the final stretch of completing my master's degree in journalism and felt this website would be a great way to present all my current work to the world. (OK, so I think big!)
Originally hailing from the suburbs of Philadelphia, I grew up within a few miles of the world-famous Ft. Lauderdale strip. I've seen a lot of changes there over the years, but it's still a great stretch of beach. I came to Gainesville in 2006 and fell in love with the beautiful oaks and wide open spaces. I mean, who has herds of bison and wild horses as well as a flagship university in their backyards. (OK, I know, I know, I think big! But I grew up in the city and anything within 10 miles or 20 mintues drivetime IS my backyard.)
Gainesville is like a big city in miniature, with a vibrant arts scene, world-class outdoor recreation and championship sports programs -- a perfect place for writers like me to find their inspiration.
As I mentioned, I'll graduate in December 2012 from the University of Florida. As part of my master's program I have the opportunity to lead a reporting lab and work directly with aspiring new journalists, as well as pubic relations, advertising and broadcast majors. I find this aspect of graduate school to be the most rewarding--personally as well as professionally.
Here's a link to my blog, Encounters Along the Way as well as my Twitter page. Or send a message to me at harrism06 on Facebook. Some of my recent tweets are featured to the left. If you have a question or comment you wish to make, or if you have suggestions on making this a better site, please email me. I'll be sure to answer within 24 hours.
I appreciate you visting, and hope you find it as interesting to view as it has been to build. It's been a real exercise in patience--and it's still being tweaked--so please bear with me.
It's a great time to be in journalism! Thank you again for your time and kind consideration.
