Long Island, New York
I was born in Queens, New York and spent the first six years of my life there before moving to Nassau County on Long Island. It is here that I lived for the next 12 years before moving to Florida.
What is Long Island?
Long Island is an island in the southeast part of New York State. It is composed of four counties: Queens and Brooklyn, which are boroughs of New York City, and Nassau and Suffolk counties, which are suburban.
When New Yorkers speak of Long Island, they are generally referring to Nassau and Suffolk counties. Most consider Queens and Brooklyn to be part of the city.
Places to visit on Long Island:
If you are interested in visiting Long Island, check out these places:
Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum:
This is a multi-purpose arena. The Coliseum is home to the New York Islanders and is where I went to see sporting events, music concerts, and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The Coliseum also hosts other events such as beer festivals and home shows.
Long Island Sound:
The Long Island Sound is a coastal body of water located between Connecticut to the north and Long Island to the south. The Connecticut River empties into the sound and it connects to the Atlantic Ocean. The coast of the sound is rocky with a variety of crabs, sea snails and seaweed lining the coast and in the water.
Other things to try:
Long Island is know for its pizza and bagels so take any opportunity you can to go to an Italian restaurant that offers pizza by the slice and a bagel place for an everything bagel with a "schmear" of creme cheese.
